This week I am interviewing also Caitlin D Burnside.
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve published one book from my current Wanderlust series “Birthright,” which is on pre-order. The lockdown Pandemic of March 2020 in Scotland, gave me the push needed to complete the stories I’d begun writing after the exhausting house move in July 2019 and completed it all circa December 2021.
After beta-readers recommendations, I’ve just changed the series title. So, I’m currently updating all my main sites… I’ve been writing since 1966. Papa called me his wee storyteller as I wrote all the stories he told me, then went on to create my own! In total, since around the late 1990s, I have written 24 novels. The first 10 were my learning curve into the literary world as an Independent Author. After I began writing again in 2019, I’ve killed that first lot. Clicked “Delete” lessons-learned.
My second series has five (5) books with over 2,000 pages in ePub format. Now, I’ve a third one as a WIP. As I’ve laid out the outlines, it’ll be a four (4) book series. It’ll be a while before I know the full extent of word count and pages (LOL!)
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My current WIP is a mythological fantasy about an Angel “Bound For Earth” and the life she’ll live as a human, part of The Elysium Series. If I say that I’ve heard whispers from my Writing Muse, I feel eyebrows raising all around me. It just came from the back of my head as usual!
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Apparently, I do! Firstly, I write mostly at night as it’s the quietest time and where my ideas flow onto paper better. Secondly, I set all my stories in Europe and the UK and the fact that it’s in British English with local lingo…
What authors, or books have influenced you?
To begin with I’ve put down the stories my Father told me before bedtime. So, you can say he was my very first influence. Then I read many non-fiction and fiction about Vampires and Witches. One) I had a health issue with blood, so the Vampire angle came in usefully. Two) I discovered that my great-grandmother had followed the Wiccan style, so it was a genuine curiosity.
Later on in my teenage years, I read an amazing author by the name of “Fred Saberhagen” and his book, “An Old Friend of the Family” and realised that Vampire stories could be created in different fashion. It send me in my writing journey later on. It became a bucket-list item but mostly my writing ideas come from films or television series.
What are you working on now?
Completing my “Wanderlust Series” and jotting down the Angel stories too. I’ve just managed recently to scrape and save for a new battery for my old laptop, so I’ve now a long to-do list to catch up with!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Remember that if you get loads of negative feedback, you are on the right track. At the end of the day it’s your stories, if you enjoy them and the beta-readers do as well then just write, don’t worry about what other people think. Every writer has their own style, be confident in yours!
What are you reading now?
I keep busy with writing, virtual farming and reading too as the isolation due to the current pandemic makes it that there’s loads of alone-time. As one who loves Superheroes, 1978, Superman with Christopher Reeve and 2001, Smallville television series with Tom Welling, I’m currently reading “The Last Son of Krypton” by Elliot S Maggin.
What’s next for you as a writer?
The dreaded promotion, I’ve websites to delete, create new ones and get in touch with people who offer “Author’s Spotlight” on their sites in order for my stories to be discovered.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you, what books would you bring?
I feel I’m already on one with the ongoing Pandemic restrictions, so I’d carry on with what’s on my tablet, so… too many to mention!
