Today I’m hosting author, Joni Parker and she was kind enough to write a guest post about what inspired her to write her latest book, Spell Breaker. Check it out below!
What Inspired Me To Write My Book
The inspiration for this book, “Spell Breaker” as well as my first series comes from “The Lord of the Rings.” After I saw the movie trilogy, my main character, Alex, showed up. She brought with her a lot of stories and kept telling me new ones. I couldn’t stop thinking about them and the only thing I could do was write them down. I set up an old computer and took three months to dump them into the hard drive. At that point, I stopped and relaxed. My brain felt empty, but I was relieved. Still, I was deeply committed to Alex and her stories. I decided to publish them one day and that was when I decided to become an author.
The work was so long I had to divide it into three books and it became my first series, “The Seaward Isle Saga.” The setting was changed from Middle Earth to the Plane of Eledon, a land created by the Mentors for the Elves after they left Earth. Seaward Isle is an island in Eledon that has fallen out of the grid holding the Plane together. The island teeters on the brink of disaster. If it detaches from the grid, it could destroy Eledon and conceivably, fall through the entry point to Earth and destroy it as well. Although Alex doesn’t know it at the time, she’s the only one who can fix it. The first series focuses on her background, her education and training as a soldier, and her life as a woman in a male-dominated society, all of which will prepare her for her ultimate test of fixing the island.
In order for Alex to resolve the problem with the island, she has to be in the Plane of Eledon, so I had to write the next series, “The Chronicles of Eledon.” In the first book, “Spell Breaker,” Alex uses her magical powers to eliminate the ring of storms around the island that has kept everyone prisoner for a thousand years. The people flee to Eledon where the problem with Seaward Isle could be reported to the Mentors. As they begin working on it, they select Alex to be the Keeper of the Keys, a set of magical keys which will help in the fix. Unfortunately, she doesn’t know how to use them. Instead, she falls back on her training and experience, destroying the criminal empire of Sawgrass, a Marsh Elf. However, for every action, there are consequences to pay and Alex is forced to make a decision that affects her future life in Eledon.
Three more books round out the series. The next one is entitled, “The Blue Witch,” where Alex learns more about the magic of the keys and her powers. It will be published as an ebook in July, and a print version will be available a few months later. “Gossamer” and “Noble Magic” will follow.
