Guest Post: What Inspired Me To Write My Latest Novel by Amy Braun

Today’s guest post is by author Amy Braun who I have posted the blog tours in past. It’s great that Amy’s come back again and has written a cool blog post about what inspired her latest novel, The Obsidian Sky. Check out the blog post and find out more about the book below.

Guest post: What inspired me to write my latest novel by Amy Braun.

As a kid, I was fascinated by pirates and vampires. I loved Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and found that pirates, despite being horrible villains and people, had some of the best legends and stories I’d ever read, full of adventure and surprise. Vampires, on the same level, have always held my interest. Their stories are just as thrilling and gothic, not to mention the mythology behind them is incredible and wonderfully diverse. When I started writing as a hobby in my teens, I decided to combine two of my favourite story creatures: Vampires and pirates. Originally, the series was going to take place on the high seas, but I changed my mind when I saw it had already been done.
I didn’t return to the idea for another decade, when steampunk was introduced to me and became another love of mine. Steampunk is a genre where you can do anything you want to. Every genre meshes with it and there are zero boundaries. Elves? Frankensteins? Frogs? You see it all in steampunk art. After having that moment of epiphany, the story ideas began exploding. I created a world for the very first time, established rules and laws and characters I’d never considered before, and put them on an epic adventure that took a direction even I didn’t expect.
When I started writing Crimson Sky, I wrote it because I had finally managed to combine three of my favourite things into one setting. I never imagined it would explode the way it did, reaching a point where Riyria Chronicles and Age of Myth author (and one of my biggest inspirations) Michael J. Sullivan would actually read it himself. Combining three unnatural elements brought a result I couldn’t be more proud of, and has opened the door to hundreds of other options. The only challenge I have right now is deciding which unlikely combination I want to choose next.
About the book
The third and final novel in an epic steampunk horror series, OBSIDIAN SKY closes the dramatic adventures of Claire, Sawyer, Gemma, and Nash, digging up the final secrets of their past, bringing new allies into a dangerous fray, and drawing friends and foes into a battle where the cost may be too much to pay…

The final struggle against the Hellions has arrived. A trapped engineer and a desperate marauder scramble to fight an enemy with unspeakable power on its side. Time is running out, and one world will be destroyed…

After sacrificing herself to save the lives of her friends and family, Claire Abernathy struggles to outwit her Hellion captors. They torment and terrify her into working on a weapon with the sole purpose of obliterating the world, friends, and love she has struggled to save. If Claire has any chance of saving those she loves, she must delve deeper into the Hellion world, and witness nightmares she could never imagine.

In Westraven, Sawyer Kendric is desperate to find the woman he loves. To do so, he must finally embrace his family’s atrocious past and heal the wounds it has caused. He will be forced to make new allies, uncover secrets that change all he knows, and find the courage to lead a ragtag crew into the darkest, deadliest battle of their lives.

Claire and Sawyer fight to save their broken world in the final installment of the epic DARK SKY trilogy.
